>Shooters, police agencies and military units have found excellent tactical usefulness, easy transition and faster training with red dot sights compared to open sights. In a crisis self-defense situation, focusing on a front sight instead of the threat is honestly tough if not impossible. When the defensive shooter has the pistol pointed at a target, having a brilliant red dot between you and a bad guy provides confidence and ability you can hit what you need to hit. In all reality, soon every new service, duty or personal use pistol sold will either offer or have the ability to mount a RDS like the Mepro MPO PRO-F for full size pistols or the Mepro MPO PRO-S for compact carry pistols.

But why are RDS becoming so popular?
Red dot sights use an emitter to project an adjustable reticle onto glass. It is reflects to your eye. Thus, the name “reflex sight”. Used with both eyes open, unlimited field of view and no parallax,RDS provides for continual situational awareness as well as being useful in low-light conditions which is something that iron sights lack. RDS reticles can be illuminated with an LED by battery. Or, gathered light as well as a tritium vial. Red dot optics have become more durable and compact. Their use on pistols and subcompact pistols a common thing.
RDS are either “open” and “closed” emitter systems. Closed emitter pistol optics are protected from the elements within a sealed unit and are very water resistant. The “open” RDS provide a minimal line-of-sight obstruction but are not protected from the elements. The “open” RDS is more easily affected Bywater immersion and be compromised by debris or dirt degrading the shooter’s ability to use the sight. Whereas, the closed emitter red dot sight gives that extra degree of protection.
The color of the dot is a personal and situational choice, red is most common. Some folks prefer a green dot. Furthermore, the size of the dot is also a consideration. While a larger MOA dot is easier to pick up, it could obscure distant targets. Conversely, a smaller dot may be harder to see, especially for shooters with astigmatism or farsightedness.
